My parents bought me my first guitar at 12 years of age. After a few upgraded instruments, including one that my dad stepped through late one night (I had a habit of leaving things in the middle of the family room floor) my father saw my interest in music and bought me a Gibson Gospel acoustic. If there is one thing new players need to learn when they start out, it is to buy the best instrument you can afford. Without that purchase, I'm not sure that I would have continued to play.
